8/28/08 - Beers Playoff Run Ends in Extra Innings

It took 22 innings in less than 24 hours. But in the end, The Beers' most successful season ever was over and The Express were moving on to the NYCMBL Semifinals.

8/16/08 - Beers Sweep First Round of Playoffs in Convincing Fashion

Game 1: W 10-0
Game 2: W 4-2

The Beers continued their dominant run into the playoffs reminiscent of the 2007 Colorado Rockies' improbable playoff berth, having won 10 out of their last 11 to advance to the 2nd round.  In Game 1 of the first round, The Beers got an early lead over the NY Knights and kept it on the strength of Andres Blanco's complete game shutout (the first in Beers history).   The offense was led by Aaron Sarfatti, who went 3 for 3 with a homerun and 4 RBIs, and Mike Darling went 2 for 3 with a double, 2 runs, and 1 RBI.  Andres Blanco cruised through 5 innings, allowing just 3 hits and letting the strong defense do its job.

Game 2 was closer, with the Beers down 2-1 for most of the game. However, the Beers never lost confidence, and the late comeback always seemed inevitable.  In the bottom of the 6th, Aaron Sarfatti hit a 3 run homer, his second of the day, that gave the Beers a lead they refused to relinquish. Sam Heiserman pitched 7 strong innings, giving up just 2 runs. He is now 6-2 with a 2.29 over his last 8 starts. Aaron Sarfatti finished the day a perfect 5/5, driving in half of the Beers' 14 runs. The Beers look to carry this momentum into the second round of the playoffs against the Express this Saturday at 3:30 PM at Roberto Clemente Park in The Bronx.

As recently as July 15th, the unofficial Power Rankings had the Beers 8th out of 9 in the Bronx/Manhattan division and 14th out of 18 overall. At the start of the season they were ranked last with 35-1 odds to win the Championship. The Beers, for years one of the perennial (if good natured) doormats of the NYCMBL, have to be the biggest surprise of the year already.  And they're not done yet....

8/7/08 - Beers Clinch Playoff Spot!

The New York Beers have clinched the 6th playoff spot after going 6-1 over their last 7 games. Playoffs are set to start August 16th and The Beers will be ready.

7/12/2008 - Beers Come Back To Complete First Sweep of the Season
W 8-7

Down 7 to 5 going into the bottom of the last inning, after beating the Rebels 32 to 1 in the previous game, the Beers refused to give in and spoil what had already been a great day with a game 2 loss. The Beers continued where they had left off the previous game, taking a 4 run lead in the first inning. However, the Rebels chipped away, tying the game in the 3rd and taking a 2 run lead in the 6th (which would end up being the final inning). It looked like the Beers might end the day on a disappointing note, but Chuck Mitchell had other plans. After Brian Moore and Sam Forman led off the inning with back to back walks and advanced on a wild pitch, Chuck ripped a single to left, tying the game. 2 batters later, Raleigh McReynolds chopped a grounder over the first baseman's head to score Chuck with the winning run for the Beers' second walkoff win of the season. Chris Moseley continued his hot hitting, going 2 for 2 with 2 RBIs, raising his average to a team best .417, and Adam Sivits also knocked in 2.

7/12/2008 - Beers Pummel Rebels in Biggest Blowout of the Season
W 32-1

The Beers scored a team best 32 runs in one of the most lopsided games in NYCMBL history. Every player in the lineup had at least 1 hit, run, and RBI, with most of the lineup scoring 3 or 4 times. Aaron Sarfati hit a grand slam with a bat that, unbeknownst to him, had already been broken, to the bewilderment of his teammates. Radha Alwa knocked in 6 runs, but aside from that, there was no individual that stood out in particular; every player had a fantastic day at the plate. Sam Forman cruised through 4 strong innings, allowing just 1 run on 4 hits and no walks in a pressure-free performance that was more than enough, considering the 12 run cushion he was given before throwing a pitch. Having been on the other end of (lesser) blowouts in the past, this victory showed the growth of the Beers franchise, and perhaps gained the attention of the rest of the league.

7/6/2008 - Mike Darling Scores Tying Run as Bronx/Manhattan Come Back to Defeat Brooklyn/Queens in the 2008 A Division All-Star Game

The Beers' own Mike Darling legged out an infield single and later scored the tying run en route to a 9-6 Bronx/Manhattan victory over Brooklyn/Queens in the 2008 All-Star game at Richmond County Bank Ballpark. Though late to the game due to a non-baseball related camping trip, he arrived just in time to make this key contribution. Chris Moseley and Raleigh McReynolds played solid defense in left field and at first base, respectively.

6/28/08 - Beers, Down 2 Runs Before The Game Started, Unable To Stage Come Back
L 12-7

The Beers narrowly missed a forfeit, as only 8 players showed up on time, but still lost. As a result of the delay, the Beers started the game with a 2 run deficit, which they never recovered from. Brian Moore scored 3 runs, and Adam Sivits hit a grand slam, but it was not enough. Mike Darling extended his hitting streak to 8 games, one of the few highlights of a somewhat dismal day. The second game of the doubleheader was mercifully cut short by lightning, which was followed by a torrential downpour that soaked the few Beers left to collect the equipment.

6/21/2008 - Kayne Konecny Caps Comeback With Walkoff Single in 7th
W 11-10
L 12-2
In a wild game, the Beers were able to overcome a 7 run deficit for their first major comeback of the season. Newcomer Aaron Sarfatti looked good in his first start of the year, walking only 2 and striking out 4 in 5 innings, but ran into some bad luck with some bloop hits falling in and some poor defense behind him.  He finished strong, though, retiring the last 6 batters he faced. Down 9-2 in the 5th, the Beers rallied for a 7 run inning, evening the score with a mix of patience, timely hitting, and a record-tying 2 Sac Flies. The Bulls retook the lead in the top of the 6th, but the Beers answered back in the bottom half, with Mike Darling hitting a game tying double. In the bottom of the 7th, Aaron Sarfatti and Peter Darling singled and advanced on a passed ball, setting the stage for Kayne Konecny's heroics. With 2 outs, Kayne (who had also scored the tying run the previous inning) ripped a line drive to left field, easily driving in Sarfatti with the winning run. Sam Forman pitched 2 solid innings of relief of Sarfatti for his first win of the season. The win was a true team effort, with every player in the lineup contributing at least a run or RBI.

The effort seemed to wear down the Beers, who were unable to capture the elusive sweep, instead getting mercied by the Bulls, done in by poor defense and a lack of hitting. Chris Moseley went 3 for 3 with a double and Radha Alwa drove in his 4th run of the day, but otherwise the offense was mostly absent. Picking up where he left off, Sam Forman started game 2 looking for his second win of the day, but after pitching 2 scoreless innings, seemed to wear down as the Bulls started to get to him. Brian Moore was solid in relief but was undone by the defense behind him.

6/14/2008 - Sam Heiserman Strong Yet Again in Close Victory Over Cubs
W 4-3
Though they were only able to manage 6 hits, that proved to be all the Beers would need behind Sam Heiserman's strong performance. Displaying excellent patience, the Beers scored on 2 bases loaded walks from Chuck Mitchell and Kayne Konecny for the first 2 runs, and Raleigh McReynolds drove in what would be the decisive run with a double in the 4th. Sam Heiserman gave up just one earned run, and ended the game with the winning run on first by inducing a popup which he took himself, taking no chances. He broke a Beers record with his 4th win of the year.

6/14/2008 - Beers Once Again Unable to Complete Sweep
L 9-3
Though Joel Perez took a no-hitter into the 4th, and set a Beers record by not issuing a walk, the Beers were unable to keep the momentum from game 1 going. Though they displayed even greater patience than in game 1, walking 10 times, the Beers failed to drive the runners in, leaving the bases loaded in back to back innings. The Cubs eventually got to Perez, including an inside the park homerun in the 7th. Perez broke new ground, however, by doing something no Beer has ever done before him: not issuing a single walk. Still, the Beers offense wasn't up to the task of bailing him out, worn out with no subs available to provide relief.

6/8/2008 - Sam Heiserman Dominant in 6-1 Victory Over the Renegades
W 6-1
Sam Heiserman struck out a career high 10 batters and gave up just 1 run in the Beers victory over the Renegades in Game 1 of a doubleheader. Brian Moore drove in 3 runs, including a clutch 2-out, 2-run single in the 3rd inning, and Adam Sivits went 3 for 3 to provide the bulk of the offense, which pounded out 11 hits altogether. The Beers defense matched the offense, breaking a Beers record by not recording a single error. Heiserman helped out by making it hard for the Renegades to put the ball in play, letting the defense relax and do its job when it needed to.

6/8/2008 - Heat and Exhaustion Hinder the Dilapidated Beers' Attempt To Sweep

L 9-3
The heat, humidity, and exhaustion got to the Beers in game 2, who, with only 9 players, had to play the entirety of both games in the field. Adam Sivits, battling illness, put in an admirable performance in his first start of the year and went 2 for 2 to cap off a perfect day at the plate, going 5 for 5 and raising his batting average to a team best .600. Otherwise, the offense was for the most part dormant, with Mike Darling and Radha Alwa both doubling.

5/21/08 - Beers Escape With Close Victory
W 10-8
The Beers showed they can win even without their heavy hitters. Missing three of their top sluggers, the Beers managed to scratch out a 10-8 win. Displaying good patience and putting the ball in play, the Beers were able to take advantage of some sloppy defense and wild pitching from the Spartans. Strikeouts--a weakness that the Beers' offense has shown in the past--were, for the most part, conspicuously absent, with only 3 recorded.

Starter Sam Heiserman started out strong but ran into rain-induced control issues in the later innings, an issue exacerbated by some sloppy defense behind him. In the last inning, with 3 runs in and the tying run on second, the Beers were able to stave off disaster with a game ending ground out to third.

Game 2 was suspended due to rain with the Beers up 4-2 and threatening for more in the bottom of the second. It will most likely be continued at a later date.

5/11/08 - Strong Pitching Undone by Complete Absence of Beers' Offense
L 5-1
L 3-0
Aside from the frequent "whiffs" heard through out the game, the Beers' bats were almost entirely silent against the Express. Striking out what could be a Beers record 15 times in 7 innings, the team was unable to put up any kind of rally, stranding the few baserunners they had. Mike Darling drove in the only run with a double, and Raleigh McReynolds doubled later, but both proved to be too little. Joel Perez pitched an excellent game, giving up only 1 earned run while striking out 5 and walking 3 in a 7 inning complete game. The effort was wasted, however, as the Beers could not find a way to put the ball in play and match the modest amount of runs scored by the Express.

Game 2 of the double header was much like the first, with the Beers striking out 13 times, for a total of 28 in both games, almost certainly a Beers record for 1 day. Newcomer Anthony Cantore pitched a strong game, allowing just 4 hits and 2 walks while striking out 8 in 7 innings. Once again, however, the effort was wasted as the Beers managed only 4 hits, none for extra bases, and 0 runs.

5/3/08 - Stranded Runners Kill Beers' Chance at Victory
L 9-4
The Beers' offense showed vitality, but most of the hits were wasted as a total of 13 runners were left on base, including 3 innings (2 consecutive) with the bases left loaded. The Beers still managed to score first, with 4 in the first 4 innings, but the Bulls struck back in the 5th and 6th, scoring a total of 8 runs in those innings as fatigue began to get the best of starter Joel Perez, who held the Bulls to 1 run over the first 4 innings but struggled through the final 2. But it was a lack of timely hitting by the Beers that proved to be the difference in the game.

5/3/08 - Heiserman's Strong Pitching, Moseley's Grand Slam Give Beers a Dominant Victory
W 7-1
Game 2 was played excellently all around. Sam Heiserman gave up just 3 hits and struck out 5 while Chris Moseley all but put the game away in the 2nd inning with a grand slam over the left field fence at Roberto Clemente. Though the Beers made 6 errors, almost none of them proved to be costly, made up for by some excellent defensive plays otherwise. A late inning sub at shortstop whose name consists of 2 letters made 2 errors that cost Sam and the Beers the shutout, but otherwise the defense was for the most part strong. Heiserman shut down the Bulls' heavy hitters, and Moseley's grand slam was all that was needed to give the Beers the win.

4/29/08 - Beers Pull Off a Tight Victory Against the Skyscrapers
W 7-6

Joel Perez knows how to pitch in the clutch.

About 8 months after getting a strikeout to end the game with the bases loaded and the tying run on third in the bottom of the 7th for his first save in the Fall league, Joel preserved his own win in similar fashion on Saturday. Joel started and cruised through 6 innings with a 7-2 lead, but the Skyscrapers started getting to him in the 7th. After 3 straight hits, Steve Rossi, fighting the wind, made an excellent catch in left field for the first out. A walk, another flyout, and a double followed, putting the tying run in scoring position. On a full count, Joel froze the #6 batter on a knee-high fastball, ending the game and handing the Skyscrapers their first loss of the season.

Offensively, the Beers showed life, with a .382 batting average for the game. Radha Alwa, Mike Darling, and Chris Moseley got the Beers started in the top of the first with 3 straight hits, scoring on an ROE by MA, a fielder's choice by Steve, and a single by Chuck Mitchell. Later in the 6th, Raleigh McReynolds doubled down the right field line, Clark followed with a hit and Radha knocked them both in with a single. After singling in the top of the 7th, Chris Moseley scored a run that would end up being critical, considering the events that would follow in the bottom of the inning.

4/29/08 - Beers Lose Game 2 of the Doubleheader Against the Skyscrapers
L 8-3

The Beers couldn't keep up the momentum from Game 1, due in part to a dearth in pitching. With Andres Blanco on the DL, Sam Heiserman unavailable and Joel Perez having pitched the first game in its entirety, Brian Moore started for the second straight day. After cruising through the first, control issues got the best of him, most likely as a result of his heavy workload. It was an admirable effort, but it's asking a lot to expect a pitcher to pitch 2 games in 2 days. Chuck Mitchell came in relief, and after a rough start, cruised through the final 3 frames, giving up only 1 run and 1 walk during that time. The offense was basically asleep, scoring only 3 runs. The Beers failed to capitalize on the opposing pitcher's wildness, who walked 7 and hit 1 batter. The Beers squandered 2 bases loaded oppurtunities and left 13 runners on base. Still, Raleigh McReynolds continued his hot hitting with a single and RBI in the 4th, while Adam Sivits and Dan Perez also knocked in 1 each.

4/29/08 - Beers Drop Single Game Against Prospects
L 13-5
The Beers lost the rubber game of their season series with the Prospects 13-5. Once again, defense and walks had the biggest impact on the game. Brian Moore cruised through 3 innings before giving up 2 runs in the 4th. He appeared to get tired and ran into some control problems in the 5th, which led to a disastrous 11 run inning for the Prospects. Adam Sivits provided some relief, throwing 1 scoreless inning in the 6th. The Beers' bats were mostly quiet, but 2 runs in the 6th kept them from getting mercied.

4/24/08 - Bad Day for Beers
Game 1: L 10-0
Game 2: L 11-8
The Beers had a rough day against the Blue Sox, dropping both games of the doubleheader. The bats were dead in game 1, with Raleigh McReynolds getting the only hit for the Beers. Worst of all, the Beers lost staff ace Andres Blanco for a minimum of 6 weeks after he fell down at first base in a freak accident, breaking his collar bone. The bats finally came alive in game 2, with the Beers scoring 8 runs early on, but a defensive implosion in the 4th inning, with 4 key errors, gave them all back. The Blue Sox eventually scored another 3 runs for the victory in a game the Beers gave away. On the plus side, the Beers offense showed some life. Starter Sam Heiserman helped his own cause with 2 hits, including a double, and 3 RBIs, and Dan Perez and Raleigh each had extra base hits, Raleigh knocking in 2 on a triple to right field. MA also knocked in 3 with a pair of singles. Hopefully this will carry into the the 3 games in the coming weekend.

4/16/08 - Beers Split with Prospects
Game 1: W 6-2
Game 2: L 6-2
The Beers got the season off to a good start with a victory against the Prospects. Andres Blanco dominated, allowing only 2 hits while striking out 10 in 7 innings. The offense was relatively strong, scoring 6 runs. Steve Rossi knocked in 2 with a bases loaded single, and Radha Alwa went 2/4 with an RBI. In game 2, despite having the incredibly unfair advantage of wearing slightly tinted prescription glasses that the Prospects protested against, starter Sam Heiserman was unable to get the win. He put in a good game, it was all for naught as the Beers' offense was shut down, getting only 4 hits and no runs.

4/10/08 - Opening Day!
